I have been an admirer of C.L. Moore (1911-1987), one of the pioneering women in American science fiction and fantasy, ever since I first read read her groundbreaking, imaginative and emotionally intense tales from the 1930ies. To get to the bottom of her fascination I started in 2022 a thorough examination of her complete short fiction, from her early stories centered on her serial heroes Northwest Smith and Jirel of Joiry up to the long-term collaboration with her first husband, legendary pulp writer Henry Kuttner (1915-1958). The result of my research, my comprehensive Essay “Die Erotisierung des Schreckens. Ein Beitrag zur Wiederentdeckung von Catherine Lucile Moore”, has recently been published in issue #125 of Franz Rottensteiner’s renowned critical magazine Quarber Merkur. Focusing on Moore’s solo works and concluding with an excursion about the Kuttner-Moore collaboration, I hope it’s an insightful tribute to what I think was one of the greatest female writers in our field.
